The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Affairs and Trade of Malta, Christopher Cutajar, affirmed, on Friday, July 20, in Tunis, his country’s readiness to cooperate with Tunisia in the fields of food security, energy transition and sustainable development.
During a meeting with the Director General of Economic and Trade Cooperation at the Ministry of Trade and Export Development, Lazhar Bennour, on the sidelines of his working visit to Tunisia from July 17 to 19, 2024, the Maltese official insisted on the importance for Tunisia to develop its exports to the Maltese market and to take advantage of the geographical proximity to this EU member country.
According to the Ministry of Trade and Export Development, the two officials stressed, on this occasion, the strategic positioning of Tunisia which could contribute to strengthening trade dynamics within the Mediterranean region, stressing the importance of strengthening cooperation between the two countries in the field of maritime transport in order to boost the dynamics of trade between the two shores of the Mediterranean.
The Maltese delegation also met the Secretary of State to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migration and Tunisians Abroad, Mounir Ben Rjiba, at the department’s headquarters. The meeting highlighted the historical relations of friendship between Tunisia and Malta as well as the desire of the two countries to develop them through the exchange of high-level visits and the preparation of bilateral meetings. This includes the twelfth Tunisian-Maltese joint commission which should be organized towards the end of this year, according to a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The meeting also focused on ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation in areas of common interest, including employment, renewable energy and water resources management.
